A new practical guide to commissioning interpreting services will be launched today, at a free event organised by the Race Equality Foundation in partnership with Sunderland City Council, Mothertongue, Everyday Language Solutions and the Department of Health.  The event will highlight the importance of interpretation and translation services (ITS), and seeks to address questions including relating to the need, quality and cost-effectiveness of ITS. The practical guide should also help commissioners in their work, helping them improve patient's experiences of ITS (including patients in rural areas) whilst sticking to tight budgets.

The event has a number of experts from the field of ITS, including Prof Rachel Tribe and Dr Paramjit Gill.  The keynote speech will be provided by Barry Mussenden, Deputy Director for Equality and Partnerships at the Department of Health.
